Before retiring 25 years ago, Susan Mauney enjoyed a distinguished career as a psychotherapist in private practice in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her enduring interest in the human psyche now finds expression in her art, where she skillfully captures mood and emotion through the interplay of paint and paper. In recognition of her exceptional talent, Susan was elected to Signature Membership in the National Watercolor Society in 2003.
Susan’s work focuses on everyday subjects, brought to life through the use of granulating watercolor paints, which create subtle colors and rich textures. Known for her thoughtful approach, she often works in series, exploring a single subject from multiple perspectives to develop a cohesive theme.
Although largely self-taught, Susan has honed her skills through more than 20 intensive, week-long workshops with nationally acclaimed artists. Among her most influential mentors are Don Andrews, Louise Cadillac, Miles Batt, Skip Lawrence, Polly Hammett, Alex Powers, and John Salminen. Susan’s work reflects a masterful blend of personal intuition and expert guidance, making her a respected figure in the world of watercolor art.
