Mike Scribner
Mike Scribner is the founder and driving creative force behind Mike Scribner Designs, a Southern Pines-based studio focused on sculptural lighting, mixed media, woodcraft, and the quiet drama of light and shadow. His work brings together natural surfaces, thoughtful design, and a deep sensitivity to how objects shape the spaces around them.
Mike’s creative path began early, with a fascination for lighting, interiors, and the way illumination can transform mood and atmosphere. He later studied interior design through the Virginia Commonwealth University Arts program and, after a 25-year career in science, returned to design in a more intentional way, earning a Master of Fine Arts in Design from VCU in 2018. His graduate work explored the relationship between interior environments, natural materials, privacy, light, and mindfulness.

Launched in 2020, Mike Scribner Designs grew from those ideas into a body of work that blends craftsmanship with experimentation. His pieces often combine wood, paper, structure, and illumination, creating objects that feel both functional and atmospheric. Rather than treating lighting as an afterthought, Mike approaches it as a sculptural element — one that invites pause, creates shadow, and changes the way a room is experienced.
His work has received recognition from the International Society of Furniture Designers, including a professional lighting category award in High Point, North Carolina, and has been shown through venues including Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA and other regional design and gallery spaces.
